Virtue: Jack and Jill, starring Adam Sandler, is a misunderstood gem. Underneath the layers of a superficial comedy lies a coming-of-age love story for the female half of our dual protagonist, Jill. While she may receive more than her fair share of hate on screen, that never stops her from pursuing her dreams: wishing for a lover who can truly accept her whole self. This is a struggle all of us can relate to in this day and age! The other half of the dual protagonist has his own flaws for sure, don't get it twisted. Jack serves as the inverse of Jill. Where his sister struggles with being accepted, Jack struggles with accepting her. Being a man of business and upfront encounters, loving his wild sister is troubling for him. Throughout his encounters with Jill and many other wacky characters, their sibling bond grows stronger even in the most ridiculous of situations.
While yes, this movie may be wildly controversial, its themes and ending make up wholly for its offensive humor. It may not be a family watch, but if you have the free time, you definitely should check it out! There is much to be learned from the siblings’ struggles. Quite a sophisticated film indeed!
Vice: Did he just make this movie to crossdress?!?! This movie is genuinely the epitome of people giving Adam Sandler money to do just ANYTHING. Okay, backing up, Jack and Jill is a movie released on November 11, 2011, to ‘raving’ reviews, sporting an impressive 3% on Rotten Tomatoes (that means this movie is a 3/100). It’s a story about twins who, no matter how much they annoy each other, are still important to one another. Now, in a vacuum, that’s all fine and dandy, right? Well, the kicker here is that both twins, Jack and Jill, are played by Adam Sandler, and wow, Jill is just nails on a chalkboard personified: Her whole character arc is, “Wow, look at how gross and cringe Jill is here, and oh wow! Someone just looked under her skirt because they thought she was a man!” Jack, on the other hand, is just a jerk; he dresses as Jill to sleep with Al Pacino (yes, the real Al Pacino) so he’ll star in a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial…. That's the main plot of the movie. And… oh! WHY IS SHAQ LICKING A HAM?!?!??! I feel like the production team really just couldn’t say no because, of course, we needed Caitlyn Jenner (pre-transition), JARED FOGLE, and Johnny Depp as little nuggets of nothing in this movie! This movie has a hard time sticking the landing on jokes, and there are characters whose entire personality is making racist jokes at their own expense. I will admit, Jack’s son’s entire storyline, being that he really likes to tape things to himself, was pretty funny, but it was like a needle in a haystack of dry and problematic humor. Now, would I recommend this movie to someone else? Actually, yes! This is SO BAD that it actually rounded the bend.
